Media & Communications Intern

Title: Media & Communications Intern

Duration: The internship duration would be for a 4 months period, starting as soon as possible. The part-time intern would be working with the Global Pulse Team in New York approximately 2 days a week.
Supervisor: Strategic Communications Officer
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist the Communications Team with the production of regular blogs, articles, press releases, brochures and other web and print content as necessary. Responsibilities will include research, writing and editing, as well as assistance with managing editorial schedules and proposing content.
- Assist the Communications Team, and the Data & Analysis Team, with condensing research findings into accessible articles, blogposts, and presentation materials.
- Assist the Communications Team with media outreach to include developing media lists of relevant journalists and publications, tracking developments in mainstream and new media, and pitching story and op-ed ideas to media outlets and influencers.
Training components and learning elements
The candidate will be joining a multidisciplinary team benefiting from rich interaction with experts in different fields, including development, data analysis and visualization, technology and communications. Throughout the internship, the intern will be exposed to many different aspects of the project.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
1. Academic qualifications
The candidate will preferably be enrolled in a degree program in Journalism, Strategic Communications or Public Relations, with some related background in online media, writing for the web, and/or copywriting.
The student should be currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (or has graduated in the last 3 months). If needed, the work done during the internship can serve as part of a Master thesis or portfolio.
2. Language Skills
Fluent English. Spanish or French a plus.
3. Required competences and knowledge
- Excellent and effective writing skills, with experience in writing for different audiences and mediums.
- Bachelor’s or Graduate degree in Journalism, Strategic Communications, Public Relations, or related subject. An interest in technology, innovation, data visualization, or ‘data journalism’ a plus.
- Candidates must submit a portfolio (links or attachments) of diverse articles, blogposts and/or written collateral samples with application.
4. Additional requirements Valuable competences and knowledge:
- Clear, persuasive writing skills both for classic media (journalistic articles or press releases) as well as writing for web and blogs.
- Experience with science, innovation or technology writing. Interest in data journalism strongly favorable.
- Skilled in interviewing and research; comfortable condensing and translating complex ideas.

Data Visualization Intern

BACKGROUND
The overarching objective of Global Pulse is to develop a 21st century approach to real-time crisis impact monitoring that enables decision makers to protect vulnerable populations with agile, targeted policy responses. To this end, Global Pulse is establishing an innovative monitoring framework that combines new types of real-time data with traditional development indicators to detect early impacts of crises, and developing free and open source toolkit – assembled largely out of existing technologies – for real-time data monitoring, collaborative analysis, visualization and decision-making.
The internship duration is between 3 and 4 months.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
(i) Assist the Data Specialist with the development of visual analytics tools for the Global Pulse Technology platform. These tools should import different datasets and will produce interactive visualizations allowing the visual understanding of different types of new data.
(ii) Use the developed tools to produce 2 - 4 interactive visualizations showing the results of research projects issued from the analytic Global Pulse methodology. Data to be visualized might include:
- Unstructured text, i.e. extracted from blogs and forums.
- Geospatial information, i.e. hyperspectral remote sensing information from satellites.
- Graphs/ networks, i.e. constructed from the spread of a message in twitter.
- Multidimensional data repositories, i.e. UN data repositories.
(iii) Collaborate in any other design activity required for data comprehension within the Global Pulse analytic methodology and technological platform.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Academic qualifications
The student should be currently pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s or a PhD degree. If needed, the work performed during the internship can serve as part of a Master’s thesis or research towards a PhD degree.
The candidate will preferably be enrolled in a degree program in design, computer science, statistics, mathematics, engineering or other related technical disciplines. Interest in the fields of global development, crisis mapping or quantitative social sciences is a requirement.
Language Skills
Fluency in written and spoken English is required. Knowledge of Spanish or French is an asset.
Required competencies and knowledge:
- Experience in data visualization and analysis, including interactive visualization and the creation of high-quality infographics.
- Knowledge of Processing language for graphics design or other visual analytics tools and languages. Please attach a portfolio.
- Experience with scripting, coding, and web design required for data access.
Valuable competences and knowledge:
- Experience with Python, Java, Ruby or C++ programming languages.
- Experience with automated text analysis, ontology-based reasoning, machine learning or GIS.
- Experience working with Big Data, social network data, and geospatial data/satellite imagery.
- Experience working in the fields of global development or crisis mapping.

Drupal front-end developer/themer volunteers and interns
Global Pulse, based in the Office of the Secretary-General at the United Nations, is looking for volunteers and interns with experience as Drupal front end developers/themers to help redesign the Global Pulse website. We are completely overhauling the look-and-feel and information architecture and would like to add more community features to the site.
