RIVAF Research: "Assessment of the potential impact of the economic crisis on decisions to undertake unsafe international migration by vulnerable population groups."
Based on quantitative and qualitative information recorded in destination countries, this one-year research seeks to understand the extent to which the economic downturn has influenced the decisions of vulnerable populations to undertake unsafe international migration.
The research will focus on migration to North America originating from Mexico and other Latin American countries, and migration to Europe, mainly Italy, Spain, Greece and Malta, originating from West, East and North Africa.
The research will analyse:
- Trends in unsafe migration levels and patterns in Europe and USA to detect potential changes since the on-set of the crisis;
- How the willingness of migrants towards unsafe migration facilitated by smugglers may have changed as a result of the recent economic downturn.
The result will help national authorities to develop policies and programmes aiming at steering would-be-migrants to proper migration paths and providing adequate assistance at points of arrival.
