“Through Data for Climate Action, we hope to generate solutions that tap into the enormous potential of data held by companies to drive localized action on global climate change” – Robert Kirkpatrick, Director, UN Global Pulse.

The winning entries of the Data for Climate Action challenge, an unprecedented data innovation competition to leverage big data and analytics for public good, will be announced on Sunday, 12 November, during a high-level event organized at the 8th Sustainable Innovation Forum in Bonn, Germany.

The challenge was launched earlier this year by UN Global Pulse, in collaboration with Western Digital and the Skoll Global Threats Fund, and called on innovators, scientists and climate experts to use data to accelerate climate solutions.

Winners of the Data for Climate Action Challenge to be Announced at Event During COP23 1Out of hundreds of applications from all over the world, 97 teams were selected to work on innovation projects around three thematic areas: Climate Mitigation, Climate Adaptation, and Climate & the SDGs. Evaluation of applications was supported in part by Spaziodati. Teams were asked to create either (I) data visualizations, apps and dashboards, or (II) research papers and posters.

A mixed evaluation committee comprised of 13 climate and data experts reviewed the submissions according to four criteria: quality, credibility, clarity and potential impact.

The six winners — three thematic winners, two category (data visualization) winners, and one grand prize — will be announced at a high-level event on Data Innovation: Generating Climate Solutions to take place during the UN climate change conference (COP23) in Bonn.

The high-level event will jump-start proceedings of the Sustainable Innovation Forum with discussions and examples of data-driven innovations to accelerate climate solutions and the Sustainable Development Agenda. See full agenda here.
