Big Data for Development & Humanitarian Action: Towards Responsible Governance

(The Hague, the Netherlands) On October 23, 2015 Global Pulse & Leiden University will host an international expert meeting on “Big Data for Development and Humanitarian Action:Towards Responsible Governance” to be held on the margins of Privacy Week in Amsterdam. It is also being organised as part of the annual meeting of the UN Global Pulse Data Privacy Advisory Group.

The event will bring together a government representatives along with top public, private, civil society, and academic experts in policy and data governance. The agenda of the meeting will be dedicated to the opportunities and challenges presented by big data in development and humanitarian sectors. The discussion will concentrate on finding solutions that could inform the design of parameters for responsible use of big data in these contexts.


The agenda will include 3 sessions:

  1. Big Data Beyond the Hype: Going From Potential to Impact, focusing on the role big data can play in the shaping of the decision-making processes for humanitarian action and sustainable development.
  2. Big Data Governance, focusing on the challenges and the solutions that could be offered when it comes to governance in the use of big data for development and humanitarian causes. This session will explore private and public sector solutions, and views on private-public data sharing initiatives for development and humanitarian missions.
  3. Challenges & Opportunities from the Regulatory Perspective, a conversation with regulators, discussing the differences and similarities between commercial vs. humanitarian and development applications of big data.


The discussion will be guided by thought leaders and representatives from development and humanitarian sectors (including UN OCHA, UNHCR, UN Global Pulse), regulatrory and private sectors and more to be confirmed soon:
