UN World Data Forum

(Cape Town, South Africa) The first UN World Data Forum will be hosted in South Africa from 15 to 18 January 2017. This is a multi-stakeholder event aimed to spur the exchange of innovative ideas and data solutions through a range of keynote statements, presentations, panel discussions, knowledge sharing and learning spaces, innovation labs, exhibits and digital events.

UN Global Pulse will host two sessions on ‘Big Data Innovations for Sustainable Development’ and ‘Working with Big Data and New Data Sources’.

Big Data Innovations for Sustainable Development

The session will bring together government representatives along with top public, private, civil society, and academic experts in data innovation. The agenda will be dedicated to the opportunities and challenges presented by big data in the development and humanitarian sectors.

The session will include:

  • An overview on harnessing big data for the SDGs by Robert Kirkpatrick, Director, UN Global Pulse
  • Presentations of operational data innovation projects from UN Global Pulse Labs in New York, Uganda and Indonesia
  • A panel discussion on opportunities and challenges with implementing and scaling proven approaches, with representatives from the Office of the President of the Republic of Indonesia, United Parcel Union (UPS), BBVA Data & Analytics and the World Food Programme.
  • Lightening talks highlighting new big data resources from colleagues within the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Data2x, LIRNEasia and UN Global Pulse.

Working with Big Data and New Data Sources

UN Global Pulse will organize together with ESRI, a session entitled ‘Working with Big Data and New Data Sources,’ to showcase successful big data projects and applications for the advancement of the SDGs. The session will allow participants to understand and experience concrete tools/applications using big data analytics.
