UN World Data Forum 2018

(Dubai, United Arab Emirates) The 2018 UN World Data Forum will take place 22nd-24th October in Dubai. UN Global Pulse, who is also a member of the Programme Committee, will organize a number of high-level and practical sessions around data innovation for social good. 

Big Data for Sustainable Development: What Does it Take to get to the Next Level? 
The session will take place on 22nd October (3:00-4:15pm) in the plenary hall, DP World Hall. 
 
It will examine inspiring examples of data innovation in the development and humanitarian sectors that have been institutionalised. Participants will hear from speakers working on data innovation and artificial intelligence in the public sector to understand barriers and recommendations for what is needed next.

Operationalising Mobile Phone Network Data for Development and Humanitarian Action
The session will take place on 22nd October (9:00-10:15am) in the GCC-Stat Hall. It is being hosted in collaboration with the Digital Impact Alliance (DIAL).
 
It will explore the operational aspects of using mobile phone network data as a public good. Participants will leave with a clear understanding of the value of the dataset for public policy and operational delivery, as well as the practices and business models for and challenges to operationalising the data type.

Analytics for public good
The session will take place on 23rd October (3:00-4:15pm) in the Dewa Hall. It is being hosted in collaboration with the Gulf Cooperation Council Statistical Center (GCC-Stat). 
 
The data revolution raises important existential questions for the NSO communities and opens a minefield for governments and civil society as they balance privacy concerns with the unprecedented and unfretted data flows. Use of data for public good cannot be done without proper data privacy and data protection frameworks as well as risk mitigation mechanisms implemented from the start.The panel will discuss how privacy protection and ethical use of data and technology can be utilized for public good.
